You can help to save the oldest trees in Bolsover District!

It’s unusual for S247 to write about issues of other areas of Bolsover District but this time we decided to “dive in” right after this story landed in our Inbox. Looks like the Labour-led Bolsover District Council is on a path to cut down the oldest trees in Bolsover District. To add a little bit of spice- the guy holding axe and leading the charge on those trees is no one else than our own… Chris Kane! Same Chris Kane who didn’t find time to answer for a single e-mail from S247 about inactive Labour Party councillors…
If you prefer to read this story from a more professional source than S247, you can go to the Derbyshire Times website here:
But if you want to read our take on this story, here it is.
Let’s start from the beginning. Some time ago Bolsover District Council sold a piece of land to a developer in Glapwell who want to build there 62 houses. But they sold this land without an access road. The only way to move forward with investment is to buy another piece of land, cut off all trees and build a road. How this deal went through is beyond me…
This stinks miles away: how an experienced businessman could buy a huge piece of land without knowing that he CANT access it? Maybe, just maybe, he was “assured” by someone that this little piece of land will be sold without any problems as soon as he secures planning permission from BDC? Hmmm…
This little piece of land is home to multiple, several hundred years old trees with immense value for the local ecosystem since they host (among many other animals) rare bats (bats eats insects so they are as ugly as useful). If you look at the picture at the top, those trees look at least 200-300 years old, maybe more. So they survived King George, Queen Victoria, multiple wars including two world wars and they will fall from… Labour greed. What you can expect from the politicians of the party which send troops for the illegal war in Iraq just to get some oil, right? Labour voters- really? You are OK with destroying another piece of Earth just for a handful of pounds sterlings? Really?
How Chris Kane is involved?
Obviously, local residents are not happy. Not only 62 new houses will put a burden on already stretched thin local amenities (we, residents of Shirebrook, know something about that, right?) but it will also destroy a patch of a precious ecosystem. More active residents organised themselves and began to fight against those plans. Our favourite guy- Chris Kane was on the planning committee that voted to grant permission to build 62 homes. He was also on a scrutiny committee that called in the decision made to sell the land providing access. He was the only one to vote against the decision being called in.
Chrissy! Now I get why you don’t have time for Shirebrook issues- you are too busy ruining the lives of people in other parts of Bolsover District!!!
Brave residents of Glapwell who tries to save those centuries-old trees need our help. They need 1000 signatures on a petition to stop the sale of land with trees. You can sign the petition here:
Please help. It will take just a moment. I have already signed it.
